Case Introduction
In the municipality of Herning, Denmark, the local water and wastewater utility – Herning Vand – faces several challenges like changes in extreme weather events and infrastructure in increasingly poor condition. As a large part of the water infrastructure was built in the 60s and 70s, the utility faces a large task in prioritizing the needed reinvestments in the network.
Herning Vand also strives towards a more proactive approach to network reinvestments, rather than reacting too late on network failures. Both for drinking water and wastewater, the utility wanted to work transparently and unified across the organization with data and data-driven decisions.

APX® for multiple utility segments
As a multi-utility, covering both drinking water and wastewater, Herning Vand use APX® as a common language across the organization, as highlighted by Ageeth Millenaar (Project Manager, Herning Vand):
APX® is used for strategic planning of reinvestments for both drinking water and wastewater. The platform is our primary tool when it comes to strategic insights into our sewer and drinking water network, as it offers an effortless and visually intuitive overview of data from multiple sources. By combining likelihood of failure and consequence of failure, we can extract data on the most critical pipe segments for further analysis. The overview of leaks and breaks as well as the element of development over time brings another level of valuable insights for our reinvestment planning.
Reinvestment planning is now no longer a complex and lengthy process:
Based on the results from APX®, we have been able to replace water mains in time – ultimately preventing unforeseen breakdown. Not only has it been timesaving for our reinvestment planning, but we are now also able to take on the task without external consultants.
Harvesting value from dynamic data insights has led to significant savings for Herning Vand:
Overall, the APX® solution provides us with stronger and more dynamic insights for priority purposes. We see the result in savings on OPEX and CAPEX of 10-15% minimum on an annual basis, ultimately delivering water supply and treatment at an overall lower cost.
